Named the "most used word of 2022" by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, "gaslighting" has stealthily permeated the daily lives of most Americans, often without their conscious recognition of its extent. Gas Light, a play adapted into a movie in the early 1940s, depicted a man's deliberate attempts to convince his wife she was losing her sanity. He manipulated her perception, making her believe the lights were dimming when they were not—a subtle but insidious form of control. This nature of gaslighting serves as a cautionary tale, urging us to remain vigilant in our relationships.
Gaslighting isn't a short-term tactic; it involves prolonged psychological manipulation of an individual or group, causing victims to doubt the reliability of their own experiences. Victims become confused, insecure, and lose self-confidence, which only deepens their dependence on the perpetrator to validate their reality. The target grows disoriented and insecure, granting the perpetrator(s) enormous power over them.
Media communication consists of pictures, graphics, and sound. The physiology of the brain’s sensory processing is manipulated to create targeted perceptions in the mind. Synesthesia (the coupling of senses), semiotics (communication through symbols and icons), semantics (the manipulation and use of words), and other elements combine to shape perceptions that are translated and expressed through language into actions, behaviors, and embedded memories. The gaslighting effect is achieved by capturing attention, using repetition, psychovisualization, and compound memory.
